WHAT TO SEE IN TIRANO

Tirano is a small town in the province of Sondrio, near the border with Switzerland, nestled between the Orobian Alps, the Bernina massif and the Stelvio mountains. Here stands the 16th-century Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano, the most important religious monument in Valtellina. The historic center is full of 16th- and 17th-century mansions, including the Palazzo Salis, built between 1630 and 1703 by the Salis, Graubünden governors and podestà of Valtellina.

VALTELLINA WINE AND FOOD

A stay in Tirano is enriched by food and wine traditions. The Via dei Terrazzamenti is an attractive trekking route from Tirano to Morbegno, which can also be traveled by mountain bike, through the vineyards of Valtellina. The Rhaetian side has as many as 2,500 km of terraces, which shape the land and form a unique landscape, giving birth to Valtellina wine, an excellence made of grapes nebbiolo and the toil of heroic viticulture. There are numerous winery cellars in the area that can be visited. Tirano is the home of Chisciöi, an appetizer consisting of buckwheat pancakes with heart of melted cheese, a recipe similar to Valtellina's "Sciatt." This is followed by excellent pizzoccheri, a typical dish originating in Teglio, a few kilometers away.
